Common European Language Framework was created by the Council of Europe to unify the levels of language competency with a help of a six-level scale, which enables the comparison of language competency. The levels are as following:


A1
- understands basic everyday-life expressions and phrases
- is able to communicate easily in common situations on a condition that the other person speaks slowly and clearly

 

A2
- understands basic sentences and expressions which relate to him/her directly
- is able to communicate in easy and routine tasks and describe common needs

 

B1
- understands the main points of a clear, standard speech about well-known topics
- is able to deal with most of common situations in speaking
- is able to write easy texts

 

B2
- understands the main ideas in more complicated texts
- is able to communicate more or less fluently and spontaneously without the serious understanding problems on the side of a native speaker
- writes clear and detailed texts

 

C1
- understands difficult and long texts, gets the hidden meanings
- uses the language fluently and flexibly for all purposes
- writes well-structured, detailed and comprehensible texts

 

C2
- understands written as well as spoken word without problems
- conveys ideas fluently and very clearly, distinguishes slight differences in meaning
